Damp-treatment solutions for walls and basements

A neglected roof can cause many problems in your home, ranging from structural damage to damp and mould.

    Identifying Rising Damp Problems

Moisture in the ground is absorbed by the porous materials in walls. This phenomenon, known as rising damp, causes water to migrate up the walls to a height of 0.5 to 1.5 metres. Rising damp is common in older buildings but can also affect more recent construction.

    Signs of Rising Damp

To determine whether your walls are affected by rising damp, look for the following distinctive signs:

    • Mould and Fungi : Mould and fungi appear as black, green or coloured patches on wall surfaces. These organisms thrive in damp environments and are not only unsightly but may also have adverse health effects.
    • Whitish Salts: Whitish salt deposits may appear on walls as water migrating through porous materials evaporates. These salts, also known as efflorescence, are key indicators of moisture.
    • Peeling Finishes: Wallpaper, ceiling coatings and other finishes such as skirting boards and panelling may come away. This occurs when excess moisture in the walls causes a loss of adhesion.

    Injection Treatment for Rising Damp

Injection treatment is a proven and effective method for combating rising damp. This technique involves injecting specialised products (such as polymers, siloxane resins, etc.) into walls to create a waterproof barrier that prevents water from rising by capillary action.

    Benefits of Injection Treatment

    • Rapid Action : The watertight barrier formed by the injected product blocks rising damp within 48 hours.
    • Long-Lasting Protection : Once the treatment is applied, it offers lasting protection against water infiltration, thus ensuring the durability of your walls.
    • Application Scope : This treatment can be applied inside or outside buildings, especially at the base of walls, where rising damp is most common.

Treatment of below-ground and partially below-ground walls, cellars and tanks

Below-ground and partially below-ground walls, as well as cellars and tanks, are particularly vulnerable to water ingress. Appropriate treatment is essential to ensure their watertightness and durability.

    Coating for Below-Ground Walls

The coating used for below-ground walls generally has a paste-like consistency similar to mortar. It is applied in a layer at least 1 cm thick to ensure strong resistance to pressure from the surrounding water and soil.

    • Pressure Resistance: The coating offers excellent resistance to negative pressure (water and soil pushing inwards) and positive pressure (water pushing from the inside outwards, as in a tank).

Coating for tanks and tanking systems

Waterproof slurry, which is thinner than render, is easy to apply and can be covered once dry. Applied in a layer 2 to 3 mm thick, it is particularly effective at resisting positive pressure, making it ideal for tanks and waterproof tanking.

    • Ease of Application : Thanks to its more fluid consistency, waterproof slurry is easier to apply than render, enabling fast and effective work.

Differences Between Positive and Negative Pressure

    • Positive Pressure : Positive pressure occurs when water pushes from the inside of a structure towards the outside. This is typically the case with tanks and other water reservoirs.
    • Negative Pressure : Negative pressure is exerted by external elements such as soil and water pushing inwards on the structure, as in the case of below-ground walls.

    Anti-Saltpetre Treatment

Hygroscopic salts, such as nitrates and chlorides, found in building materials and soil can migrate through damp walls. These salts absorb moisture from the air, making masonry and render difficult to dry.

    Effects of Hygroscopic Salts

    • Absorption Capacity: Hygroscopic salts capture moisture from the surrounding air, which can delay or prevent walls and render from drying normally. This creates conditions conducive to mould growth and can damage building materials.
    • Salt-Based Dehumidifiers: This property of salts is used in commercial dehumidifiers, which use salts to absorb moisture from the air.

    Anti-Saltpetre Treatment Methods

To treat saltpetre problems effectively, it is essential to eliminate sources of moisture and implement suitable protective measures:
    • Application of Waterproof Barriers: Waterproof coatings are used to prevent salt migration.
    • Wall Drying: Ventilation or dehumidification systems are installed to reduce ambient humidity.
