Project description

This Meereen Habitat project involves work on a residential building in Luxembourg belonging to our client. Although the building is in good overall condition, several of its internal and external walls show signs of rising damp.

This capillary rise, caused by faulty or missing waterproofing at the base of the walls, has led to several forms of visible damage. The walls are affected by damp patches, persistent mould and peeling paint. This damage compromises not only the appearance of the home, but also the durability of the structure and the occupants' quality of life.

This is both a technical and ambitious project designed to ensure the building's long-term durability while improving the occupants' comfort and quality of life. The use of natural materials such as wood-fibre panels and the integration of modern technologies such as DFI ensure a lasting result in line with today's requirements for energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

Initial assessment and project background

Following an in-depth analysis and detailed assessment, the main cause of the damage was identified as rising damp. This phenomenon, often linked to faulty foundation waterproofing, allows water in the ground to rise through the walls by capillary action, bringing moisture and causing damage inside the building. To address this issue, the team decided to carry out several major interventions.

One of the first key stages of the project was the installation of a dual-flow air-treatment unit, commonly known as DFI (Dual-Flow Insufflation). This system is designed to improve the building's Ventilation by reducing indoor condensation, which aggravates damp problems. It continuously renews the air, limiting mould growth and providing occupants with better air quality every day.

At the same time, we insulated the attic using wood-fibre panels. This naturally insulating, environmentally friendly material not only improves the building's energy efficiency by reducing heat loss, but also plays a crucial role in regulating humidity. Wood-fibre insulation offers a and and durable solution that protects both the building and its occupants' comfort while reducing the project's environmental footprint.

Project objectives

Stop rising damp in the walls

Installing waterproofing solutions and the DFI system are essential steps in preventing water from continuing to rise through the building's walls by capillary action.

Protect and remediate the walls

By treating damp-affected walls and providing long-lasting protection, the aim is to prevent further damage and stop mould and unsightly stains from reappearing.

Restore damaged areas

Wood-fibre panels improve both thermal and acoustic comfort. Their density helps limit heat transfer and reduce external noise, creating a quieter, more comfortable indoor environment throughout the year.

Improve indoor air quality

Thanks to the DFI system, the air inside the building will be continuously renewed, supporting the occupants' health and well-being. This system will also help maintain a healthy, dry indoor environment.
